Shah Alam MP Khalid Abdul Samad said the fact that website filtering was even being considered again showed how desperate the BN government was to stay in power.
“As far as Internet penetration is concerned... it’s hardly 30 per cent. Even with 30 per cent, they’re finding it hard to handle the issues raised on the Internet,” he said.
“I suppose that’s the last option they have if they want to survive the next election.” Khalid argued that BN has all this while been able to clamp down on all other forms of media, and so any attempt at Internet censorship would “definitely” be politically motivated.
However, the PAS man remained confident that such a move will not succeed and could only backfire on the government.
“I think the support for us will gather in strength,” he said.
“When they try to clamp down... people will know they can’t answer all the issues and the only way they can respond is to use force.”
